The United Nations has issued a warning regarding the “alarming regression” experienced by South Sudan, amid escalating clashes in the northeast that jeopardize years of peace progress. The fragile power-sharing agreement between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar is at risk due to violent confrontations between their allied forces in Upper Nile State.
Recently, a UN helicopter was attacked during an attempted rescue mission in Upper Nile State, resulting in the death of one crew member and injuries to two others. Moreover, an army general was killed during this mission, heightening fears in a nation already burdened by political unrest and violence.
In response to the crisis, President Kiir has called for calm and assured the public of his commitment to avoiding a return to war. Yasmin Sooka, chair of the UN commission, stated that South Sudan is experiencing a deterioration that threatens to erase hard-won advancements in peace. South Sudan, recognized as the world’s youngest nation, concluded a five-year civil war in 2018 with the establishment of a power-sharing agreement between rival leaders Kiir and Machar.
