US and Congo Engage in Preliminary Talks for Minerals Agreement

The United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo are in early talks to establish a minerals deal, under which the US would provide military support in exchange for access to DRC’s critical mineral resources. The DRC, a leading producer of cobalt and other essential minerals, faces challenges from rebel groups controlling resource-rich areas. The United States is engaged in preliminary discussions with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) concerning access to the nation’s critical minerals, reported the Financial Times. This arrangement may involve the US providing military support in exchange. The proposal emerged after President Felix Tshisekedi expressed the Trump administration’s interest in DRC’s abundant mineral resources in a recent interview.

The DRC is renowned as one of Africa’s most resource-rich nations, being the premier global producer of cobalt, which is essential for various industrial uses including electric vehicle batteries. The country contributes over 70% of the world’s cobalt supply and possesses substantial reserves of gold, copper, tin, lithium, and tantalum.

Unfortunately, several mineral-rich territories in eastern DRC are currently controlled by the M23 rebel group, reportedly supported by Rwanda, which facilitates the smuggling of minerals across the border. The potential deal with the US is viewed as a means to fortify Congolese military capabilities to address the ongoing conflict.

Congolese Senator Pierre Kandi Kalambayi has proposed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that American companies be granted mining rights in exchange for training and equipping Congolese armed forces. This partnership aligns with US interests in diminishing China’s influence in the Congolese mining landscape.

A spokesperson for the State Department noted, “The DRC has a significant share of the world’s most important minerals needed for advanced technologies. The United States is open to discussing partnerships in this sector that align with the ‘America First’ program of the Trump administration.”
