Peace Monitors Urge Investigation into Violence in South Sudan

Peace monitors in South Sudan have urged for immediate investigations into violence, particularly the attack on a UN helicopter. Tensions in Nasir have escalated, resulting in numerous casualties and prompting international concern regarding the stability of the unity government formed under the 2018 peace deal.

In South Sudan, peace monitors have demanded expedited investigations into recent violent incidents in Upper Nile State, including an attack on a UN helicopter that resulted in the death of a UN personnel and numerous soldiers. The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) condemned these acts and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities by the warring factions, advocating for dialogue as a means to restore peace.

The RJMEC issued a statement from Juba, urging all parties involved to halt hostilities and facilitate a serene environment. This appeal comes in light of escalating conflicts in Nasir since March 3, which has led to significant arrests within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO), notably among officials aligned with First Vice President Riek Machar.

Concerns have mounted from the international community regarding instability in Juba, emphasizing that these unrests threaten the fragile unity government established under a 2018 peace agreement that ended South Sudan’s five-year civil war. Reports indicate that over 20 individuals have been killed, with many more injured in the deserted areas surrounding Nasir.

The RJMEC has urged the unity government to implement necessary measures to alleviate tensions, highlighting the importance of the Joint Defence Board, which is responsible for the command of organized forces as per the peace deal. They also called for the National Transitional Committee to expedite the unification and deployment of forces to ensure lasting peace and prevent future incidents from arising.
