Lecturers from Mandela University recently participated in flood response training in Malawi, facilitated by Rescue-SA, a reputable disaster response organization. This initiative, part of a UK-ISAR-led program, aims to enhance rescue capabilities across Africa. The training includes critical powerboat rescue skills, equipping participants to disseminate their knowledge throughout their communities, especially in areas facing high drowning rates due to flooding and inadequate rescue services.

Drowning is a significant concern in Africa, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that the continent has the highest global drowning rates, resulting in approximately 66,000 deaths annually. A substantial number of these fatalities occur in rural and flood-prone areas with limited access to emergency services, where the average yearly drowning toll is 1,477, or 2.54 deaths per 100,000 individuals. Children under five are particularly vulnerable, often drowning in rivers, dams, and swimming pools.

The increasing frequency and severity of floods, attributed to climate change, further heighten the risk of drowning, especially in informal settlements. Disasters like Cyclone Freddy in 2023 have underscored the urgent necessity for well-trained aquatic rescue teams capable of operating in such challenging environments. This training initiative represents a pivotal advancement for the University of Mandela and its Department of Emergency Medical Care (EMC).

The knowledge and skills acquired will be incorporated into the EMC curriculum, offering students the latest techniques in aquatic and flood rescue. Additionally, the training experience will facilitate the development of simulation-based learning modules, allowing students to engage in realistic rescue scenarios prior to graduation. This program reinforces the University’s commitment to disaster response education and strengthens its collaboration with global organizations, paving the way for future training and joint projects in the region.
