UN Report Exposes Atrocities Against Muslims and Refugees in Central African Republic

A UN report details grave violations against Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees in Southeast CAR, revealing abuses such as summary executions and sexual violence. Attacks were tied to Wagner Ti Azandé (WTA), with MINUSCA enhancing protective efforts while the CAR government seeks to bring perpetrators to justice.
The recent UN report reveals severe human rights abuses against Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees in the Southeast Central African Republic (CAR) perpetrated by armed groups. This investigation by the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) and the UN peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA) includes allegations of summary executions, sexual violence, torture, forced labor, and looting.
The report highlights violent incidents in the Mbomou and Haut-Mbomou prefectures occurring in October 2024 and January 2025, resulting in at least 24 deaths, including cases of summary execution. These attacks were reportedly coordinated by Wagner Ti Azandé (WTA), an armed group linked to the national army, which emerged from another group called Azandé Ani Kpi Gbé.
In light of the escalating violence, MINUSCA has increased its protective measures for civilians and is aiding in the re-establishment of State authority in the troubled areas. Meanwhile, the CAR government has apprehended several WTA members and is proposing the establishment of a Tribunal of Grande Instance in Zémio to combat impunity for these heinous acts.
The UN report presents a grave portrayal of human rights violations in the Central African Republic. Armed groups have increasingly targeted vulnerable populations, notably Muslims and Sudanese refugees, with horrific acts of violence. In response, measures are being taken by both MINUSCA and the CAR government to ensure civilian protection and address issues of justice and impunity.
