Guatemalan officials have evacuated at least 282 families living nearby due to the intensified activity of the Volcano de Fuego, which began erupting on Monday. The volcano, located about 35 kilometers (22 miles) southwest of Guatemala City, displayed increased activity with visible columns of lava, ash, and rocks starting Sunday night.
The eruption has led to volcanic ash rising to heights of 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) and extending 50 kilometers (31 miles) in various directions. Consequently, the National Coordinating Agency for Disaster Reduction (Conred) has declared an institutional orange alert, promoting ongoing communication between local government officials to ensure preparedness and responses to the volcanic activity.
To date, more than 900 individuals have been evacuated as a precautionary measure against the potential fallout from volcanic ash. Authorities have also indicated that an additional 30,000 residents in the vicinity may be at risk. In light of the situation, classes have been suspended across four municipalities.
The Volcano de Fuego ranks among Guatemala’s three most active volcanoes, out of a total of 32. After a 50-day dormant phase, this 3,763-meter-high volcano has resumed activity following its last major eruption in June 2018, which tragically resulted in over 400 fatalities.
