Western Nations Urge UNSC Action Amid Iran’s Uranium Enrichment Expansion

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will convene in a private meeting on Wednesday to examine Iran’s expanding stockpile of highly enriched uranium. This meeting was initiated by six member states, including France, Greece, Panama, South Korea, Britain, and the United States, who aim for increased oversight of Iran’s nuclear endeavors.
The council will discuss Iran’s duty to collaborate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by disclosing information regarding undeclared nuclear materials found at various sites. As of now, Iran’s UN mission in New York has not responded to requests for comments concerning this meeting.
Iran claims that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes; however, the IAEA has indicated that the country is enriching uranium to 60% purity, approaching the 90% threshold necessary for nuclear weaponry. Western governments assert that such elevated enrichment levels do not serve any civilian applications.
The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was established between Iran and several global powers, which included sanctions relief in exchange for nuclear limits. Nonetheless, the agreement began to deteriorate following the US withdrawal in 2018 under President Donald Trump, prompting Iran to incrementally decrease its adherence to the terms.
Britain, France, and Germany have cautioned the UNSC about the potential activation of a “snapback” provision, which would reintroduce UN sanctions on Iran to impede any advances towards nuclear weapons development. This option is set to expire on October 18 when the UN resolution supporting the JCPOA concludes. President Trump has instructed US diplomats to collaborate on strategies for reinstating international limitations on Iran.
