Timor-Leste’s National Parliament formed a Parliamentary Commission to support the Western Sahara issue, comprising members from various political parties. The Saharawi Republic Ambassador highlighted this as a commitment to the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination. Timor-Leste’s previous Commission has actively participated in international forums advocating for Saharawi rights.

On March 10, 2025, Timor-Leste’s National Parliament unanimously approved a resolution to establish a Parliamentary Commission addressing the Western Sahara issue, reaffirming their solidarity with the Saharawi cause. This new Commission comprises representatives from all political parties in the Parliament, including three members from the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction Party (CNRT), two from the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN), one from the Democratic Party (PD), one from the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and one from the KUNTO Party.

Mr. Malainin Abba, the Saharawi Republic (SADR) Ambassador to Timor-Leste, remarked that this resolution reflects a significant commitment. He emphasized, “The Timorese National Parliament approval yesterday of a resolution to create a Parliamentary Commission to accompany the issue of Western Sahara is a great Solidarity stand and a real Commitment from the Parliament, the Political Parties represented in National Parliament and the Timorese people at large towards the Struggle of the Saharawi people to exercise their right to free Self-determination, Independence and full Sovereignty over the Saharawi Republic (SADR).”

Notably, Timor-Leste’s previous Commission for Western Sahara had also comprised representatives from various political parties and participated in the 46th European Conference of Support and Solidarity with the Saharawi People (EUCOCO) held in Berlin, Germany, in December 2022. Such engagements underline Timor-Leste’s continued support for the Saharawi people’s rights and struggles for independence.

The approval of the resolution to establish a Parliamentary Commission by Timor-Leste’s National Parliament marks a significant step in aligning with the Saharawi people’s pursuit of self-determination and sovereignty. This initiative showcases the commitment of various political parties within Timor-Leste and reflects a unified stance toward supporting oppressed communities internationally. Furthermore, the continuation of engagement in international forums, such as EUCOCO, illustrates Timor-Leste’s dedication to this cause.
