Morocco and Mauritania convened the fifth session of their Joint Military Commission in Rabat, focusing on defense cooperation. Initiated in January 2020, this annual meeting aims to enhance regional security by reinforcing military ties between the two nations.

During this session, General Mohammed Berrid of Morocco engaged with Mauritania’s Chief of Staff, Mokhtar Bolle Chaabane, to discuss collaboration on critical issues such as border security, migration management, and the combat of cross-border crime, which are vital for regional stability.

Additionally, the Mauritanian delegation held discussions with Abdellatif Loudiyi, Morocco’s national defense minister, highlighting a firm commitment towards joint security efforts. Although military cooperation between the two nations dates back to 1971, a formal framework established in 2006 paved the way for the Joint Military Commission.

The recent meeting signifies continued emphasis on border control and security initiatives ahead of prior discussions in November, where General Berrid and Mauritania’s Minister of Defense, Hanena Ould Sidi, focused on fortifying military relations. This partnership underscores their mutual dedication to addressing shared security challenges in the region.

The fifth session of the Joint Military Commission between Morocco and Mauritania underscores their commitment to enhancing regional security and stability. By addressing key issues like border management and cross-border crime, both nations reaffirm the importance of collaboration in tackling mutual challenges. Continued military cooperation reflects a longstanding partnership aimed at ensuring a secure and stable regional environment.
