Brazil Commences Construction of 11 New NPa500MB Offshore Patrol Vessels
Brazil has initiated the construction of 11 NPa500MB offshore patrol vessels under the Patrol Vessel Acquisition Program (PRONAPA). These 500-ton vessels will primarily serve to monitor the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), conduct search and rescue operations, and combat illegal activities such as fishing.
The projected cost for acquiring eight NPa500MB vessels is estimated at 2.8 billion reais (approximately 476 million USD). Emgepron, a state-owned entity, anticipates three of these vessels will be configured specifically for mine countermeasures operations. The initial construction budget for the first unit is set at 250 million reais (around 42.5 million USD).
The NPa500MB design is included in Brazil’s Growth Acceleration Program, emphasizing its importance to national interests. A technical cooperation agreement signed in November 2023 between the Brazilian Navy and Emgepron underscores their commitment to advancing engineering designs and shipbuilding capabilities for these vessels. The production schedule anticipates the completion of the first vessel by 2025, enhancing Brazil’s maritime security and its engagement in international security endeavors.
Currently, the Brazilian Navy operates a fleet of 22 offshore patrol vessels across various classes. Future acquisitions will supplement existing classes and maintain operational readiness, ensuring robust maritime security management.
