Egypt’s Initiative Achieves Over 2.7 Million Surgeries to End Waiting Lists
The Ministry of Health in Egypt reported that over 2.7 million surgeries have been completed under the President’s Initiative to End Waiting Lists since its inception in July 2018. The initiative provides free surgeries to patients and aims to alleviate long waiting times by improving healthcare delivery and management systems.

Dr. Ahmed Mustafa, who serves as the Health Ministry’s Advisor for the Initiative, emphasized the ministry’s dedication to enhancing hospital performance and medical service delivery. Continuous training for medical personnel and the modernization of surgical facilities are crucial components of this effort, which also includes the improvement of an automated data system to track patient cases effectively.
The initiative has implemented a unified electronic system for treatment decision management across different hospital capacities. This facilitates the transfer of patients among various healthcare providers, ensuring proper allocation of resources and expedited care.

Since its inception in July 2018, a total of 2,700,736 surgeries have been performed as a part of ongoing efforts to alleviate waiting lists.
From July 2023 to February 2025, the ministry registered 220,452 monitored cases and received 260,033 calls from patients via the hotline. The initiative covers a wide range of surgical procedures, including those for heart ailments, oncology, and organ transplants, ensuring patients are centrally assigned to hospitals for efficient service.
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, noted that the initiative aims to eliminate the lengthy waiting periods for surgeries that previously ranged from one year to 18 months. As a result of the initiative, the average waiting time has decreased to two to three weeks by leveraging state funding supplemented by donations from various organizations, including civil society and the Tahya Misr Fund.
