Democratic Party of Kenya Announces Exit from Kenya Kwanza Coalition

The Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK), under the leadership of Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, has formally announced its decision to exit the Kenya Kwanza coalition. The party, citing untenable political circumstances, issued a 30-day notice on March 7, 2025. This notification was directed to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat, with a copy also sent to relevant political officials.

In their official letter, DPK representatives, including Chairman Esau Kioni and Secretary General Jacob Haji, referenced the coalition’s Termination Clause (8), which allows for such an exit. They emphasized that the prevailing political developments necessitated this withdrawal, stating, “Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza Coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments.”

This political move coincides with Muturi’s increasing criticisms of the government following his son’s abduction, which he has publicly condemned. He expressed personal trauma stemming from this event and criticized the government’s handling of enforced disappearances. Muturi stated, “I have personally suffered as my son was abducted, leaving my family in turmoil.”

While some of President Ruto’s allies have accused Muturi of politicizing the issue, asserting that his actions are driven by ambitions for the 2027 elections, Muturi remains resolute. Notably, Senator Wahome Wamatinga claimed that Muturi’s criticisms are politically motivated, while others have deemed them inappropriate for a serving cabinet member. Nonetheless, Muturi declared, “I do not fear being sacked. I trust in God,” demonstrating his defiance amid the backlash.
