Outgoing African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, voiced his serious concerns regarding the rising tensions and violent confrontations, particularly in Nasir County, located in Upper Nile State. He emphasized that recent events, including an assault on a United Nations helicopter and violence across regions such as Western Equatoria and Western Bahr el-Ghazal, jeopardize the ongoing peace process.

Mahamat condemned the escalation of violence and urged all involved parties to exhibit utmost restraint. He emphasized the need for accountability among the perpetrators and swift measures to safeguard citizens’ wellbeing. Furthermore, he advocated for an immediate cessation of hostilities, adherence to ceasefire agreements, and an urgent commitment to national dialogue.

After enduring several years of civil conflict, South Sudan’s warring political factions reached a peace agreement in 2018. In August 2022, they agreed to prolong the transitional phase until February 2025, with elections anticipated in December this year, despite previous delays.

The IGAD virtual summit highlighted the urgent need for dialogue and de-escalation amid rising tensions in South Sudan. With leaders calling for accountability and an end to hostilities, the focus now shifts towards fostering peace and adherence to the existing agreements.
