The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), connected to Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, has formally severed ties with the Kenya Kwanza coalition led by President William Ruto. In a letter addressed to the coalition secretariat and the Registrar of Political Parties, the party declared that its involvement in the coalition is no longer feasible due to ongoing political circumstances. The letter emphasized that DP is providing a thirty-day notice to exit the coalition, in accordance with the termination clause stipulated in the coalition agreement.

The letter was co-signed by DP Secretary General Dr. Jacob Haji and party Chairman Esau Kioni, and it became effective as of March 7. This decision marks a significant shift, especially as the DP facilitated Muturi’s entry into the coalition prior to his appointment as Attorney General. The deteriorating relationship between Muturi and President Ruto has been cited as a key factor influencing his anticipated departure from the Cabinet.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah further supported this claim, stating in an interview that Muturi was aware of his diminishing standing within the Cabinet.
