Turo Darboe donated 3,689 bags of sugar through VDF to support vulnerable communities in The Gambia. This initiative reflects a commitment to poverty alleviation and long-term corporate social responsibility. Political parties and organizations received significant allocations to aid their communities, emphasizing unity and inclusivity among different groups during the holy month of Ramadan.

Turo Darboe, under the auspices of the Vision Development Foundation (VDF), has donated 3,689 bags of sugar to various political parties, organizations, individuals, and community groups as part of an initiative aimed at alleviating poverty and empowering communities. This donation reflects VDF’s commitment not only to immediate relief efforts but also to long-term corporate social responsibility.

On Tuesday, Mr. Darboe facilitated the distribution of nearly 4,000 bags of 10 kg sugar to key recipients, including the National People’s Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP), each receiving 300 bags, while other political entities received between 150 to 200 bags. Moreover, the Christian Council was allocated 200 bags, the National Assembly received 171 bags, and individuals with disabilities benefited from 100 bags of sugar.

During the holy months of Ramadan and Tobaski, Mr. Darboe has been known for his philanthropy, despite being out of the country for health reasons over the past six months. His generosity particularly shines during festivity periods, where he has a history of distributing food and animals to vulnerable populations in The Gambia, regardless of their faith.

Saihou Fofana, VDF’s Public Relations Officer, lauded Mr. Darboe’s humanitarian efforts, emphasizing that the distributions are pivotal for assisting communities throughout the months of Ramadan. He noted that political parties were designated to facilitate the sugar distribution to reach those in need more efficiently, stating, “We believe that these people would more easily access the sugar through their political party.”

Karafa Sonko, representing the UDP, expressed gratitude to VDF for supporting the Muslim community during Ramadan, highlighting the unification of all political parties involved in this initiative. He remarked, “The VDF could have called only one or two political parties to benefit from this gesture, but instead, they promoted inclusivity, which is commendable”.

Lamin Saho from the NPP acknowledged VDF’s generosity and confirmed that the sugar bags would be distributed to needy communities in the Kanifing Municipality and beyond. Similarly, Honorable Samba Jallow from the National Reconciliation Party (NRP) welcomed this initiative, recalling previous donations made to provincial National Assembly representatives.

Lastly, Ismaila Jallow, a councilor in Suba Ward and deputy chairperson of Brikama Area Council, remarked that the donation was timely and greatly needed, stating, “We received many requests from our people for sugar, rice, and oil, and this gesture from VDF came at the right time.”

The recent donation of 3,689 bags of sugar by Turo Darboe through the Vision Development Foundation emphasizes a strong commitment to alleviating poverty and fostering community support. Various political parties, organizations, and individuals benefited from this generous act, illustrating unity and inclusivity among Gambians. The initiative aims not only to provide immediate aid but to reinforce long-term efforts toward social responsibility within the country.
