Key Outcomes from the Second Meeting of the Royal Government’s ECCC Task Force

On March 12, 2025, H.E. VONGSEY Vissoth, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister, presided over the second meeting of the Royal Government’s Task Force on cooperation with the United Nations regarding the implementation of the ECCC residual functions. The meeting was attended by H.E. KEO Remy and representatives from 14 key ministries and institutions, underscoring a collaborative approach to addressing the ECCC’s outcomes and future initiatives.
During the meeting, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the contributions of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HUN SEN, the former Prime Minister, who was instrumental in establishing the ECCC. He noted that the Court has facilitated unprecedented national reconciliation in Cambodia, affirming its role in achieving objectives outlined in the Paris Peace Accords and restoring territorial unity.
H.E. Deputy Prime Minister also praised the efforts of Samdech Maha Bovor Thipadei HUN MANET, the current Prime Minister, for his commitment to upholding the principles of peace and sustainable development established by his predecessor. Progress reports highlighted the ECCC’s achievements from 2006 to 2022, emphasizing the court’s legacy in promoting peace and national reconciliation through educational initiatives on historical truths.
The meeting further discussed the Draft Concept Paper for establishing an ECCC Legacy Institution, with objectives to preserve archives, promote training and research on ECCC’s jurisprudence, enhance educational programs on genocide prevention, and foster partnerships for peace education. This initiative aims to safeguard the ECCC’s legacy while supporting victims and promoting a culture of justice and development in Cambodia.
The session concluded with plans to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance on May 20, 2025, emphasizing the importance of highlighting the ECCC’s legacy and achievements. H.E. Deputy Prime Minister urged ministries and institutions to intensify their cooperative efforts to prevent a recurrence of genocide and strengthen Cambodia’s global standing.
