Tigray Interim President Accuses Eritrea of Exploiting Regional Turmoil

Getachew Reda, Tigray Interim President, accused Eritrea of exploiting turmoil in Tigray and warned against destabilizing factions within the TPLF. He emphasized the need for federal support without military intervention and cautioned against the potential for renewed conflict.
Getachew Reda, the President of the Tigray Interim Administration, has publicly accused Eritrea of attempting to exploit the turmoil arising in Tigray. During a press briefing on March 13, 2025, he stated, “There are many parties who think they can benefit from turmoil that will be created in Tigray,” specifically naming the Eritrean government as one such party.
Getachew asserted that the Eritrean government instigated its first conflict with the Ethiopian Federal Government following the Pretoria Agreement. He emphasized that achieving peace with Eritrea should not negate the historical atrocities committed against Tigray. Furthermore, he suggested that some individuals, fearing impending dangers, are misrepresenting their affiliations to manipulate circumstances effectively.
He expressed concerns that Eritrea perceives Tigray as a potential “buffer zone” amidst threats from the Ethiopian government. According to Getachew, certain factions of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), having lost legitimacy, are jeopardizing regional stability by aiming for profits derived from conflict.
The press briefing coincided with the Interim Administration’s recent call for the federal government to acknowledge the escalating crisis and extend necessary support, while also warning of a faction within the Tigray military potentially compromising the Pretoria Agreement. However, Getachew clarified that they have not sought military intervention from the Federal Government, nor do they consider the current situation to warrant such measures.
He attributed the ongoing crisis in Tigray to an illegal TPLF group striving to seize power forcibly, as they have been deemed illegitimate by the Electoral Board. He firmly stated, “The region should not enter into another war,” highlighting the role of the interim administration as sanctioned by the Federal Government, urging federal authorities to fulfill their responsibilities in this regard. Additionally, he remarked that there is a lack of local youth willing to “sacrifice themselves” for personal political interests.
In summary, Getachew Reda has raised serious allegations against the Eritrean government, suggesting its intention to benefit from the instability in Tigray. He has called attention to TPLF factions that threaten regional peace and stability, while articulating the need for the federal government to recognize the crisis without resorting to military intervention. The situation remains delicate, and unity is essential to avoid further conflict.
