UN Secretary-General Celebrates Kyrgyz-Tajik Border Treaty Signing

The UN Secretary-General lauded the signing of the State Border Treaty between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, marking a successful end to lengthy negotiations. The agreement allows two closed checkpoints to reopen and flights between Bishkek and Tajik cities to resume. The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed his approval regarding the recent signing of the State Border Treaty between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, marking a significant milestone after lengthy negotiations. This agreement was formalized during a meeting between Presidents Sadyr Japarov and Emomali Rahmon in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, indicating a commitment to resolving border issues.

As part of this agreement, two border checkpoints that had been closed since 2021 are set to reopen, facilitating movement along the nearly 1,000-kilometer Tajik-Kyrgyz border. Additionally, air travel between Bishkek and the Tajik cities of Dushanbe and Khujand is scheduled to restart imminently, ensuring improved connectivity.

The Secretary-General, António Guterres, celebrated this action as a “historic achievement,” highlighting the dedication and resolve of both nations’ leadership in concluding this protracted negotiation process. Guterres anticipates ongoing constructive interactions between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, which he believes are crucial for building mutual trust and fostering peaceful development in the region.

Border conflicts have marred relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, experiencing numerous skirmishes over the past decade. The violence escalated in 2022, culminating in a severe six-day confrontation in September. In light of these tensions, the UN Secretary-General had previously urged both nations to pursue dialogue as a means to achieve lasting peace and stability, as prior border incidents had caused significant displacement among local populations.

The signing of the State Border Treaty between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is a momentous development aimed at enhancing regional stability and cooperation.
