Zimbabwe’s head coach Michael Nees has named a 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria. The squad includes players such as Jordan Zemura and Marshall Munetsi. Though they are at the bottom of Group C, Nees remains hopeful despite challenges, notably the absence of injured captain Marvelous Nakamba. The matches are critical for reviving their chances of qualification.

Michael Nees, the head coach of Zimbabwe, has announced a 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin Republic and Nigeria. Notable inclusions include Udinese defender Jordan Zemura and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Marshall Munetsi. A significant highlight is the unexpected return of forward Walter Musona, who had previously retired in 2022. However, the squad will miss captain Marvelous Nakamba due to injury.

The Warriors are set to face Benin at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on March 20, prior to traveling to Nigeria for their clash with the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on March 25. Currently, Zimbabwe finds itself at the bottom of Group C with two points from four matches, yet Nees expresses optimism about their chances for qualification.

“It’s a very tight group; there are still six games to go and 18 points to play for,” stated Nees. He emphasized that the group situation is not yet determined, noting, “The team in first place can easily drop. We have to rise up, compete until the final game, and ensure fair competition.”

As Zimbabwe prepares for the challenging matchup against Benin, Nees recognizes the tactical skills of former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, now leading the Cheetahs. He remarked, “Benin beat Nigeria, they played a draw against Nigeria, and they qualified for AFCON.” Nees added that while their friendship spans three decades, it will have no bearing during the match.

Zimbabwe aims to deliver strong performances in both games to reinvigorate their World Cup qualification prospects.

In summary, Zimbabwe’s coach Michael Nees has confirmed a competitive squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria. Despite facing challenges, including the absence of captain Marvelous Nakamba due to injury, Nees remains hopeful about their chances for qualification. Acknowledging the tactical prowess of Benin’s coach, he stresses the importance of determination and competitiveness in their final matches.
