Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi, causing severe injuries and displacements. Mozambique reported six fatalities, while Malawi recorded three deaths and significant homelessness. Relief operations are challenged by infrastructural damage following the cyclone’s destructive path.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals in both Mozambique and Malawi, as reported by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique noted that the cyclone claimed six lives, injured 20 additional persons, and displaced approximately 9,525 individuals across the provinces of Nampula and Niasa, along with Zambezia province.

In Malawi, the cyclone caused substantial devastation with three reported fatalities and rendered 20,000 residents homeless due to severe flooding in the southern region. Chiphiliro Khamula, a representative from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, stated that displaced individuals are currently being housed in evacuation centers.

The cyclone initially made landfall in northern Mozambique early on Sunday and subsequently moved to southern Malawi, where it resulted in significant flooding from Monday to Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that relief efforts are facing considerable challenges due to impassable roads and collapsed bridges.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has had a devastating impact on Mozambique and Malawi, resulting in at least nine fatalities and significant displacements. Relief efforts are ongoing but are hindered by infrastructural damage. Historical context indicates that both nations are vulnerable to such disasters, as evidenced by the previous Cyclone Chido’s toll in December, which saw numerous casualties.
