Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed at least nine lives, according to reports from officials. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique stated that six fatalities occurred in the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, along with 20 injuries and the displacement of 9,525 individuals. In Malawi, three additional casualties have been reported, with approximately 20,000 people rendered homeless due to severe flooding in the southern region.
The cyclone, which made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday, progressed into southern Malawi, resulting in substantial flooding from Monday to Wednesday. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), indicated that those displaced by the disaster are currently being housed in evacuation centers.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that ongoing relief efforts are being obstructed by significant damage, including washed-out roads and bridges, making access to affected areas challenging. This recent cyclone follows the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido last December, which resulted in the deaths of 73 people in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
