Sudan Imposes Import Ban on Kenya Over RSF Rebel Group Hosting

The government of Sudan has announced a suspension of all imports from Kenya due to Kenya’s decision to host the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rebel group engaged in armed conflict against the Sudanese army. This restriction encompasses all trade routes including ports, railways, and air transport, and was communicated through a notice issued by Sudan’s Acting Minister of Trade and Supplies, Omar Ahmed Mohamed Ali.

In the written notice, it was stated, “The import of all products from Kenya via all ports, crossings, airports, and entry points is suspended starting from this date until further notice.” The minister emphasized that this decision was taken to safeguard Sudan’s national interests and security in light of Kenya’s sponsorship of the RSF.

The decree mandating the import ban will remain effective until further notice, and authorities within Sudan have been instructed to implement this ban immediately. Notably, Kenya supplies various products to Sudan, including agricultural items such as tea, food commodities, and pharmaceuticals.

Following the signing of a political charter on February 22 in Nairobi by the RSF and other rebel groups to establish a parallel administration, Sudan’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hussein Al Fadil, had forewarned about a possible ban on imports from Kenya. He indicated Sudan’s intention to file a formal complaint with the African Union and other international organizations seeking action against Kenya.

During a press conference on February 24, Al Fadil expressed concerns regarding Kenya’s involvement in Sudanese affairs, asserting, “This is due to the interference in Sudan’s internal affairs and the hosting of events for the terrorist RSF militia and its allies, which target Sudan’s security, stability, and unity.” He also remarked that the Sudanese government is contemplating further economic sanctions against Kenya, highlighting that President Ruto’s actions conflict with international agreements and regulations.
