President Mahama Supports Expansion of Islamic University in Ghana

On March 14, 2023, President John Dramani Mahama praised the Iranian Government’s decision to expand the Islamic University in Accra by adding a Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery. He highlighted the institution’s role in providing education to numerous Ghanaian youth, regardless of their religious affiliations, stating, “And that is a very good symbol of the partnership between Ghana and Iran.”
The Islamic University College, Ghana (IUCG), founded in September 2000 by the Ahlul-Bait Foundation, has provided significant healthcare services to communities in Accra. During a credential ceremony for Mr. Ali Ghomshi, the newly appointed Ambassador of Iran to Ghana, President Mahama emphasized the historical ties between the two nations, which began during the era of the Non-Aligned Movement, advocating for self-determination and liberation from oppression.
President Mahama expressed his enthusiasm for enhanced relations and invited Iranian investors to explore opportunities in Ghana, noting the interest shown by several Iranian businessmen. He affirmed, “We are happy to invite more investors and business people to come and invest in Ghana.”
Addressing the issue of Palestine, President Mahama reiterated Ghana’s stance that violence must cease and advocating for a two-state solution to address the conflict.
Ambassador Ghomshi conveyed greetings from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, congratulating President Mahama on his electoral success. He emphasized the need for further cooperation in political, economic, and cultural sectors, and announced the forthcoming Eight Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation Meeting in Ghana, along with an invitation to the Iran-Africa Conference in April.
