Brazil reported a nominal budget surplus of BRL 63.7 billion in January 2025, significantly exceeding the expected BRL 35.3 billion. This surplus is the first in a year and the largest since January 2022, driven by an impressive increase in the central government surplus.

In January 2025, Brazil achieved a remarkable nominal budget surplus of BRL 63.7 billion, an increase from BRL 22.2 billion in January 2024. This surplus surpassed expectations significantly, as analysts had forecasted a surplus of BRL 35.3 billion. Notably, this marks Brazil’s first budget surplus in a year and the highest surplus recorded since January 2022. A substantial contributor to this outcome was the central government surplus, which rose dramatically to BRL 49.6 billion, compared to BRL 9.65 billion from the previous year.

Brazil’s budgetary performance in January 2025 reflects a significant improvement, illustrated by a larger-than-expected surplus. The increase from the previous year demonstrates effective fiscal management and represents the highest surplus in over two years, marking a potential shift in the country’s economic landscape.
