Sheryl Hermonstine has been elected as the new President of the AAG, following elections held at the National Racquet Centre. Hermonstine received five votes, while Dr. Ariane Mangar received one. The meeting also saw the appointment of other officials, including Mark Scott as First Vice President, amid ongoing governance issues in the organization.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has recently appointed Sheryl Hermonstine as its new President following an overdue Annual General Meeting held at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown. During the election, Hermonstine received five votes while her opponent, Dr. Ariane Mangar, earned one. It was noted that several clubs did not participate in the voting process and the incumbent Aubrey Hutson was absent from the elections.
As per the AAG’s regulations, any nominees who are not present at the AGM must indicate their election intent through a letter submitted to the Returning Officer at the time of the elections. Hermonstine, who previously served as First Vice President under Hutson, had taken on presidential duties during Hutson’s suspension in 2023 amidst controversies related to the CARIFTA Games.
In addition to Hermonstine, other newly elected officials include Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim as Second Vice President, Dwayne Carter as Treasurer, and Niall Stanton as Assistant Treasurer. The committee is further bolstered by members Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmont.
James Cole has been re-appointed as General Secretary, with Kenisha Headley stepping in as Assistant General Secretary. The elections took place under the supervision of Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson, amid ongoing public disputes illustrating challenges in the governance of Track and Field athletics.
In summary, Sheryl Hermonstine’s election as President marks a new chapter for the AAG amidst prior challenges in leadership and governance. The association has also appointed a robust team of officials to guide its future, reflecting a desire to restore integrity and effectiveness in Guyana’s athletics community.
