The Junior Starlets, Kenya’s national U17 Women’s soccer team, are set to compete against Cameroon in the third round of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Head coach Mildred Cheche has affirmed the team’s readiness after the team secured a 5-0 aggregate victory over Uganda, culminating in a 3-0 win in the return leg held at Nyayo National Stadium.

In advancing to this stage, Kenya had previously defeated Uganda 2-0 in the first leg in Kampala and demonstrated a strong performance overall. Cameroon has also advanced by defeating Ethiopia 6-2 on aggregate, setting up a competitive match between the two teams.

During the match against Uganda, Patience Asiko netted one goal, while Brenda Achieng showcased her talent by scoring twice on her debut. Cheche praised Achieng’s performance, highlighting her ability to manage pressure and her impact during the game. “She’s really a good player and able to read the game well,” remarked Cheche.

The first leg against Cameroon is scheduled for April 18, with the return match to take place in the following week. Recognizing Cameroon’s physicality, Cheche emphasized the need for rigorous training to enhance the team’s physical readiness. “We must work hard in training and on our physical,” she stated.

Captain Halima Imbachi noted that although Cameroon appears physically imposing, the team has prepared both mentally and psychologically for the challenge ahead. The overall winner from both legs will secure a place in the 2025 Women’s World Cup finals, which will take place in Morocco from October 17 to November 8. Kenya aims to qualify for their second consecutive World Cup appearance after their debut last year in the Dominican Republic.
