The Ohlthaver & List Group is rebranding Pick n Pay Namibia to Model starting 1 July, ending a 27-year franchise due to unsustainable losses. Senior executives emphasize a return to roots and a tailored shopping experience for Namibians, promising new benchmarks in grocery retail.

The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group has announced the replacement of Pick n Pay Namibia with the Model brand, effective from 1 July. This decision marks the conclusion of O&L’s 27-year franchise agreement with Pick n Pay South Africa, which was initiated due to ongoing losses. O&L previously operated stores under the ‘Model Supermarket’ name prior to this franchising arrangement.

Sven Thieme, O&L’s executive chairman, stated that the rebranding to Model not only signifies a return to tradition but also represents a fresh shopping experience for consumers. He emphasized that the company, which began its retail journey under the Model name in 1965, is passionate about evolving its brand while maintaining its deep-rooted connection to Namibia.

The official launch of Model stores is set for 1 July, accompanying phased refurbishments that will enhance consumer experiences throughout the nation. Graeme Mouton, the managing director of Model, described the forthcoming shopping experience as uniquely tailored to the needs of Namibian customers, featuring quality products and dynamic retail approaches.

Mouton further articulated that Model embodies authenticity and commitment to community, promising to revolutionize grocery retail in Namibia. As the O&L Group moves to assume full control of its retail operations, measures are already being put in place to ensure a sustainable business model that prioritizes employee security.

Thieme previously noted that the decision to end the franchise was influenced by sustainable business concerns, reflected in the reported losses of Pick n Pay South Africa. A CNBC Africa report mentioned that Pick n Pay is facing significant financial challenges, with impairments on unprofitable stores contributing to an expected full-year loss, largely due to high debt costs and operational hurdles during power shortages in South Africa.

The shift from Pick n Pay Namibia to Model signifies O&L Group’s commitment to revitalizing the retail experience in Namibia by embracing its roots. This transition reflects a strategic move to ensure sustainability and employee security while enhancing consumer shopping through tailored services. The newly established brand aims to become a benchmark in the grocery sector, emphasizing quality and community values.
