The UAE, led by HE Lana Nusseibeh, participated in the Ninth Brussels Conference aimed at supporting Syria’s transition. Key discussions included the return of refugees, the role of women in peace processes, and the fight against extremism. The UAE has pledged over EUR 1.5 billion in aid to support Syria and Syrian refugees. The conference reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to Syria’s stability and territorial integrity.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), represented by Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, participated in the Ninth Brussels Conference on “Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition” held on 17-18 March 2025. This significant event gathered various stakeholders, including EU institutions, UN representatives, and Syrian civil society, all committed to fostering global support for an inclusive transition in Syria.

The conference focused on strategies to support the voluntary return of Syrian refugees while easing the pressure on host communities. Participants pledged to ensure ongoing assistance for Syrians within the nation and across the region. HE Nusseibeh emphasized the critical need for a fully inclusive transition process and highlighted the essential involvement of women in achieving long-lasting peace in Syria.

Nusseibeh stated that there is a direct correlation between women’s engagement in peace negotiations and the successful implementation of post-conflict resolutions. “For Syria’s full potential to be reached, Syrian women must have a seat at the table,” she asserted. Furthermore, she called for heightened efforts to promote tolerance and combat extremism, condemning recent attacks on Syrian security forces and urging accountability for such violence.

The UAE continues to demonstrate its steadfast support for the Syrian populace, contributing more than EUR 1.5 billion in aid since the onset of the conflict, including EUR 250 million in the last two years alone. HE Nusseibeh also reiterated the UAE’s commitment to Syria’s stability and territorial integrity, urging respect for international law, particularly regarding Israel. In addition to attending the conference, she engaged in discussions with EU officials and diplomats from Europe and the Middle East.

The UAE’s participation in the Ninth Brussels Conference underscores a commitment to supporting Syria’s transition towards peace. Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh’s emphatic call for women’s involvement, alongside ongoing humanitarian aid, reflects the UAE’s strategic support for stability in the region. The emphasis on cooperation against extremism and the reaffirmation of Syria’s sovereignty highlights the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding this issue.
