UN Urges South Sudanese Leaders to Favor Dialogue Over Conflict

On March 18, Nicholas Haysom, the UN’s special representative in South Sudan, called upon South Sudanese factions to prioritize dialogue and avoid a return to military conflict. He expressed that the nation is at a critical juncture, threatening the achievements of the 2018 Revitalized Agreement. Immediate political de-escalation is essential to avert a resurgence of civil war.

Haysom emphasized that the ongoing peace process is at risk of collapse and underlined that this region cannot bear the burden of another conflict. The situation escalated following the takeover of the Nasir barracks by the White Army militia on March 4, leading to heightened tensions across the country.

The UN envoy shared reports of arrests within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) while some officials have gone into hiding. He noted that air strikes in Nasir have led to civilian casualties and the rise of hate speech poses an ethnic conflict threat. Haysom praised President Salva Kiir for his assurance against war but urged all parties to fully commit to the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement.

He urged the African Union Security Council to facilitate dialogue between President Kiir and Deputy Riek Machar, encouraging them to address their disagreements together to exemplify unity. Additionally, Haysom called for the release of detained officials and proposed a resolution of disputes through dialogue rather than military action. Rebuilding trust and confidence among all parties is crucial for peace in South Sudan.
