Intensifying Clashes in Sudan Result in Rising Casualties and Humanitarian Crisis

The ongoing clashes in Sudan have resulted in the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killing at least 50 individuals in Khartoum over the past week. The violence is intensifying as the RSF engages in combat with the army for control of the capital. According to the Khartoum Emergency Response Room, citizens are enduring severe violations by the RSF and their allies.
Concerns have been raised regarding the abduction of around 70 people, including 12 volunteers, while forced displacement in central, southern, and eastern areas of Khartoum has significantly escalated. Additionally, reports indicate instances of sexual violence, although exact figures remain elusive due to societal stigma surrounding such events. Malnutrition is described as having reached perilous levels, leading to the death of seven children since early March.
UNICEF anticipates that approximately 3.2 million children in Sudan will experience malnutrition this year. Moreover, famine has been declared in three displacement camps in western Darfur and some regions in the Nuba mountains, as per a U.N.-supported assessment. The conflict, which ignited in April 2023, continues to intensify, especially with the army’s attempts to reclaim Khartoum.
In a recent video address, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo asserted that his troops would not abandon the Republican Palace, donning a kadamol headscarf typical of the RSF fighters. Meanwhile, the army reports its forces are making progress towards Khartoum, augmenting pressure on rival paramilitary groups. Currently, the conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced over 12 million individuals, and has generated one of the largest humanitarian crises worldwide. Approximately 3.5 million people in Khartoum have been displaced due to the violence, with at least 100,000 facing acute famine conditions, according to U.N. reports.
