In recent statements, Muna Eltahir, the head of Practical Action in Sudan, expressed grave concerns over USAID cuts, describing them as the most severe she has ever encountered in her extensive humanitarian career. These reductions have left many communities without essential services like power and clean water, particularly poignant during the holy month of Ramadan. Sudan, already grappling with political instability and civil conflict, is further impacted by climate change challenges, exacerbating food insecurity and community livelihoods.

Practical Action is actively engaged in assisting communities in Sudan, specifically in Kassala and Gedarif states, which are prone to drought. They provide essential resources such as drought-resistant seeds, agricultural tools, and infrastructure to ensure access to water. The organization was supporting nearly 400,000 individuals prior to funding cuts in January, and their efforts included constructing water points and supplying solar panels. However, the cessation of USAID funding, amounting to $2.5 million for a World Food Programme project, has severely hampered these operations.

The announcement on January 25 mandated an immediate halt to ongoing projects, leading to the suspension of contracts and the loss of 11 staff members from Eltahir’s team. The affected communities, who were eagerly anticipating improvements in their living conditions, faced disappointment. Eltahir, burdened by the news, relayed that, despite the understanding exhibited by the communities, explaining the situation was profoundly difficult.

Fortunately, prior to the funding cuts, the essential agricultural inputs were distributed and farmers had begun planting. However, significant project components, including solar panels and water tanks, remain unused while Practical Action seeks alternative funding sources. Eltahir noted that the organization is in discussions with various donors to mitigate the impact of the loss, although the reduction constitutes roughly 25% of their funding in Sudan. Thus, while Practical Action intends to sustain its programs through diversified funding, the loss of USAID support remains a critical challenge for the rural communities in Sudan.
