A Chinese startup has launched the Dobot Atom, an AI humanoid robot priced at $27,500, with mass production anticipated by mid-year. Capable of performing several household tasks, the robot signifies China’s advancements in robotics. The country aims to enhance its tech sector amid growing global competition, as highlighted by government initiatives to support AI and robotics development.

A robotics startup in China has begun taking preorders for its AI-powered humanoid robot, the Dobot Atom, priced at 199,000 yuan ($27,500). The company, Dobot, based in Shenzhen, aims to start mass production by mid-year. This humanoid robot is capable of performing tasks such as making breakfast, toasting bread, pouring milk, and transporting items.

Standing at 153 centimeters tall and weighing 62 kilograms, Dobot was founded in 2015 and has established overseas offices in Japan, Germany, and the United States. The company announced its preorder availability on Tuesday.

Additionally, the Midea Group, a major home appliance company, unveiled a humanoid robot prototype with capabilities such as handshaking, dancing, bottle opening, and screw driving. Industry expert Ma Jihua stated that the introduction of humanoid robots indicates a rapid advancement towards mass production.

Ma emphasized that China is a promising market for robotic applications, particularly in eldercare, educational assistance for children, and domestic tasks. During a meeting in February, Chinese President Xi Jinping encouraged technology entrepreneurs to foster healthy development in the private sector, according to Xinhua News Agency.

In light of the growing China-U.S. competition in technology, Premier Li Qiang indicated in a recent government report that China will focus on enhancing its self-reliance in science and technology, as well as supporting the deployment of AI models for producing intelligent robots and new energy vehicles.

The launch of the Dobot Atom humanoid robot highlights China’s significant advancements in robotics technology. With substantial market potential in various sectors, the development and mass production of humanoid robots appear to be gaining momentum, reinforced by government support for innovation in the tech industry. This shift underscores China’s commitment to becoming a leader in the global robotics market.
