Dangote Group to Develop Nigeria’s Largest Port in Ogun State

The Dangote Group, Nigeria’s largest conglomerate led by Africa’s richest man, is set to build Nigeria’s biggest port in Ogun State. The project revival follows favorable policies from Governor Dapo Abiodun. Additionally, an $800 million cement factory is being restarted, aiming to enhance Nigeria’s cement production capacity significantly.
The Dangote Group, headed by Nigeria’s wealthiest individual, plans to construct the nation’s largest seaport at the Olokola Free Trade Zone in Ogun State. This decision arises from the improved political environment under Governor Dapo Abiodun. Previously, the project was abandoned, but the favorable policies now in place have prompted a revival of the venture, although specific details remain undisclosed.
In addition to the port project, the Dangote Group is reviving plans for an $800 million cement factory situated on 533 hectares near Itori, Ogun State. This facility, projected to open in November 2026, is expected to produce up to six million tonnes of cement annually. The project was previously halted due to opposition from former governor Ibikunle Amosun.
Upon completion of the Itori cement factory, Ogun State will emerge as Africa’s largest cement-producing area, complementing the existing 12 million tonne cement plant in Ibese. The Dangote Group engages in various industrial and agricultural sectors, further amplifying its influence in Nigeria.
The Dangote Group’s initiatives signify a substantial investment in Nigeria’s infrastructure and economy. The construction of the largest seaport and the revival of the cement factory emphasize the commitment to bolster the Ogun State economy through job creation and increased production capacity. With these developments, Ogun State is poised to solidify its position as a key player in Africa’s industrial landscape.
